“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” (Matthew 28:19)

On October 28th, the RtH Malawi team led a Discipleship & Leadership Training at Kakoma, T/A Mtema Lilongwe District, Malawi, Africa. We give praise to God that our team successfully trained 54 leaders from 20 Bible Study Groups in an effort to increase their multiplication of disciples. We conducted the training with several aims in mind:
  • Encourage fellowship amongst the Bible Study Group members by directing them to work together and serve one another.
  • Emphasize on spiritual discipline among leaders so that they would stand out as role models – godly men & women – in their communities.
  • Equip leaders to shepherd their communities AWAY from "religion" and TOWARDS Christ.

We saw leaders rededicating themselves to Jesus and mention that RtH's teaching is more practical than other teaching they’ve studied— indicating to our team that the Bible Study Group Leaders really learned the material well. Throughout the training, a minimization of denominational gaps & differences unfolded — a result of our team's efforts to build fellowship amongst community members by bringing together leaders of various denominations to study together.

Last month’s training took a group effort to be a success: RtH Malawi Ministry Partners Martha & Brenda worked hand-in-hand teaching women’s and children's ministry. RtH Malawi Staff members Donnex, Joshua and myself taught on Shepherd Leadership Training. And our Bible Study Zone Leader Dashan, along with our community partner Velias, helped steer community mobilization and coordination between the RtH Malawi team and community members.

Spiritual Leaders Idolized
Joshua Training Men's Bible Study Leaders
Joshua Training Men's Bible Study Leaders
"But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many." (Matthew 20:26-28)

Reaching the Hungry’s Shepherd Leadership is grounded in God’s Word and points to Jesus coming to serve, not to be served. This is in contrast to many of the religious cultures in Malawi.

For instance, while it is good to respect & honor those in authority, in Africa, those categorized as “spiritual fathers” often go beyond just being leaders in the eyes of churchgoers. They become idols to people. So Reaching the Hungry’s teaching is unique in Malawi since it focuses on the relationship between man and God — not man and church/church leaders.

Worldly Cultures Idolized
Martha & Brenda Training Women's Bible Study Leaders
Martha & Brenda Training Women's Bible Study Leaders
“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)

Similar to other districts in Malawi, Lilongwe is covered with churches all over but people continue to still live in sin. People ARE in churches but NOT in Christ. And it seems like everyone boasts about their denomination — but not God. This is in direct contrast to what Jeremiah 9:23-24 tells us to do: "Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord."

There is competition between churches to gather numbers but not disciples. This competition is fueled by the misconception that when you preach the truth and rebuke sin & specific cultural beliefs that go against the will of God, people will not follow you and/or your church will lose members. Our RTH Malawi team plants & grows interdenominational Bible Study Groups that counter such misconceptions. And in the midst of communities worshiping their culture, church, and church leaders — rather than God — Reaching The Hungry conducts Leadership & Discipleship Trainings for local Bible Study Group Leaders throughout Malawi to help free their communities from cultural idolization.

A Final Thought
The Bible Study Group Leaders we served are thankful to Pastor Carlos, as well as to Reaching The Hungry and its donors, for making last month's Leadership & Discipleship Training possible. One final thought I would like to leave you with is this: in Malawi, the standard of living in remote areas makes it so difficult for one to buy a Bible on their own. This is where Reaching The Hungry steps in and helps to meet this need by providing Bibles translated in Chichewa, both as hard copies and as audio. Our team is beginning to run low on our stock of hard copy Bibles so if you’d like to support Reaching The Hungry meet this need in Malawi, click below to give:

Beyond Buildings

Writer: Alfred (RtH Malawi Staff)

"And all that believed were together, and had all things common" (Acts 2:44).

Reading this verse reminds me of how the church is beyond just buildings. It is a people. And we must remember how important it is for us Christ-followers to not only gather together "at church" but also to gather together "as a church".

250+ attendees (13 Bible Study Groups total) gathered together in Dedza, Malawi

And on October 14th, 2023, the RtH Malawi Team heeded God's Word and organized a Joint Bible Study Revival Outreach at Mtakataka T/A Kachindamoto, Dedza District, Malawi. The goal was to revitalize pre-existing Bible Study Groups in the district, build up unity and fellowship amongst the groups & members, and build up self-trust in the leaders to have faith in themselves that they are capable of leadership through Christ. We also aimed to bring many new souls to Jesus through this outreach and designed it to be a wake-up call to the local Study Group Leaders & members to carry out the Great Commission. Over 250 people of all ages attended our outreach which consisted of mass prayer, praise & worship, Word sharing, praying for people, and Bible distribution. Throughout the day, various social & cultural barriers were broken down which led to people giving their lives to Jesus for the first time, as well as already saved Christians being convicted & rededicating their lives to Christ.

Cultural Breakthroughs

Similar to other countries, Malawi has a multitude of churches. However, most of the churches preach for their own favor since the pastors often like to gather crowds to themselves, rather than to God. This results in people being more attached & dedicated to their local churches instead of to God. Throughout Dedza, and in other districts in Malawi, there's also an idolization of certain cultural beliefs that go directly against the will and the Word of God. This unfortunate reality underscores the need for, and the value of, these outreaches. The outreach we conducted last month was, and stands, as a call onto the local community to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and develop a personal relationship with Him.

Social Breakthroughs

When people here become familiar with their Bible Study Leaders, it makes it more difficult for them to open up and tell their leaders what they are going through in life. Most if not all have grown up within the same community — some are even closely related. And according to Malawian culture, there are certain issues you simply don't tell everyone — issues that are confidential, such as marital problems, certain diseases & sicknesses, and even some nightmares. Our outreach provided a comfortable space for members and by seeing new faces — like those of us on the RtH Malawi team — a lot of people came forward asking for prayer & counseling.

With the help of the Holy Spirit, our team provided marriage counseling to some, while others received encouragement from our team to visit their local hospital so that they could receive necessary medical guidance from the physicians for certain health conditions (e.g. diabetes, tumors, etc.). Just like other African countries, Malawi has some religions that restrict their members from going to a hospital because in doing so is an admission that you are lacking in faith. So our team made a point to emphasize the necessity of medical care during our counseling, in addition to praying over them for healing & miracles.

From left to right: Daniel, Alfred, Brenda, Joshua, Michael, Donnex, and Martha

Last month's outreach took an incredible group effort to pull off. Here's a glimpse at how the team worked together throughout the day to make this outreach a massive success: to begin, Sister Tadala, a local of Mtakataka, opened with a wonderful word of prayer, then Brother Gift, another local of Mtakataka, led with some welcoming remarks of encouragement. After that, Sister Brenda (RtH Malawi Ministry Partner) led the whole group in mass prayer. Next, I shared from God's Word while Joshua (RtH Malawi Staff) served as our photographer, led men's counseling, and even joined our team in praying for people. Later, Martha (RtH Malawi Ministry Partner) helped with counseling for many of the people while Daniel (RtH Malawi Ministry Partner) led the intercessions as the outreach went on and even joined the team praying for those who needed special prayers. Throughout the outreach, Donnex (RtH Malawi Staff) served as the Director of Ceremony while Michael, a local Zone Bible Study Leader in Mtakataka, led team coordination between the visiting team and the hosts.

The RtH Malawi Team wants you to also know how heartwarming it was for us to witness the shouts of praise from attendees as we distributed Bibles to Study Group Leaders. Due to the financial circumstances of those living in remote areas of Malawi, many find it difficult to buy Bibles of their own. So last month's outreach not only broke down social & cultural barriers, but also financial ones — growing the church beyond buildings in Jesus' name. The people we served are thankful to Pastor Carlos, as well as to Reaching The Hungry and its donors for making this outreach – and the delivery of Bibles – possible in their community. As John 1:1-2 says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God."

Bread

 Writer: Alfred (RtH Malawi Staff)

80+ attendees gathered together in Lilongwe, Malawi

"But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). In years past, we’ve seen revival meetings take place in Malawi during which the Gospel is preached, people repent from their sin and receive Jesus as their Lord & Savior… but then those meetings end without any follow-up. Rarely are steps taken afterwards to ensure new believers are building their faith on the Word of God to help them progress towards maturity in Christ. So in the absence of spiritual bread, these new believers return to sinful behaviors. Evangelism without follow-up is like giving birth to a child but then not nurturing the child to help them grow into a healthy adult.

Reaching The Hungry does not miss this critical step. We believe every new believer should be spiritually nurtured. So the RtH Malawi team assigns them to Bible Study Groups (BSG) and provides Bible lessons to guide believers on their journey with Christ. Putting members into small groups paves the way for them to get to know one another and fellowship together. This is especially important since here in Malawi, many Christians can be attached to their denominations, not to God. Reaching The Hungry fosters Bible Study Group environments that allow everyone to feel comfortable to share & contribute during conversation — despite certain denominations.

The Launch

On October 9th, 2023, the RtH Malawi team organized a Bible Study Groups Launch that launched FIVE new Bible Study Groups in the area of Senior Group Village Headman Bwatha1 T/A Mtema, Lilongwe District, Malawi.

RtH Malawi Staff leading worship for attendees
Here's a glimpse at how the RtH Malawi team worked together to make this Bible Study Groups Launch happen:

First, Daniel (RtH Malawi Partner) opened with a word of prayer and announcements. Next, Joshua (RtH Malawi Staff) taught about worship. Then, Donnex (RtH Malawi Staff) led the Bible study. Finally, I served as the Director of Ceremony. Also, our team created an illustration that provided attendees with tips on how to conduct their Bible Study Groups. After forming the groups, we granted authority to participants to choose their own Study Group Leaders and provided Bibles to those leaders. With the standard of life and financial status in remote areas of Malawi, it is very difficult for one to buy a Bible on their own so these Bibles were a blessing to them from Reaching The Hungry. It was wonderful to hear shouts of joy as the groups watched their leaders receive them.

The Breakthroughs

Joshua & Alfred giving Bibles to Study Group Leaders
Over 80 people attended our Bible Study Groups Launch. We were also excited to have two Senior Group Village Heads (Bwatha1 and Bwatha2), as well as several other Village Heads from all around, join us for the ceremony. Here in Malawi, most traditional cultures go against Biblical principles — and the custodians of culture are chiefs. Once a chief is transformed, it becomes much easier to reach an entire community for Christ. So when Group Village Head Bwatha1 gave a speech during the ceremony, that opened the door for the RtH Malawi team to serve in her area. In her speech, the village head thanked Reaching The Hungry for gifting the Bibles, as well as mentioned that it was the first time in her regime she had seen such a function.

Donnex leading a Bible study at the Bible Study Groups Launch for 80+ attendees

Not only did our team launch new Bible Study Groups, we also saw several new souls come to Christ. Praise God! We bless the name of the Lord for the success of this Bible Study Groups Launch. "Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits" (Psalms 103:2).

Chale's Story: Whoever Waters Others Shall Be Watered

  Posted July 2023

Whoever Waters Others Shall Be Watered

Written By: Chale Atikonda

Hi! My name is Chale Atikonda, from Malawi, Africa and I had a privilege to join the Reaching the Hungry Philippines Mission Trip Team in July 2023. I had an amazing experience serving with my teammates on this mission trip as it was a completely diverse team with team members from the continents of North America, Africa, and Asia. As a team, we already had a lot to learn from each other and I could literally see the beauty of diversity in the body of Christ during our team’s debrief and reflection time.

Reaching the Hungry in collaboration with the Davao Alive Church team in The Philippines is a vessel that God is using to transform many lives of people and communities in The Philippines and I witnessed this in person during this mission trip. This team is devoted to bringing life and hope to people living in slums... very poor communities.

But our team had an opportunity to pray with and for the people, share the Gospel of Christ, do an eye clinic, donate resources like clothes, do manual work like helping paint the church room, helping in a VBS for both kids and teenagers and many more ministry activities. And I was privileged to meet other people who God has transformed physically and spiritually through their own testimonies from a miserable life they lived a few years ago before God transformed them through the work of Reaching the Hungry in collaboration with Davao Alive Church in their communities. The amazing gospel receptive hearts of the Filipinos puzzled my heart because I had less expectation of this.

As I left for The Philippines, I thought I was going to be a blessing to the people there but immediately I began serving with the team there, my time and the people I met became a huge blessing to me than I thought I was to them. Both young and old Filipinos are people of big hearts, ever smiling, they listen attentively and with curiosity. Our team was welcomed and quickly adjusted as if we were in The Philippines for a year already. Time went by so fast that I as I wanted to spend more days there, days did not last long. I went and came back a different person, positively impacted and refreshed to do ministry better henceforth. I agree with the writer of Proverbs 11:25 which says, “The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.” Truly, whoever refreshes others and whoever waters shall be watered.

Brothers and sisters in Christ, I would like to encourage you to consider joining one of the Reaching the Hungry Mission Trips and I guarantee you that you will never come back the same. And whatever or however way the LORD enables you, please support Reaching the Hungry on her quest to transform the lives of people, and communities for Christ and seeing the Great Commission fulfilled in our generation according to the will of God. May God bless you as you consider to support and partner with Reaching the Hungry.

Mexico Orphanage Mission Trip - April 2023

We Were Humbled That Day

Written By: Daniel D.

The trip with Reaching the Hungry was eye opening. The orphanage was astonishing.  It was well run, and oozing with love.  As you walked around you could feel the intentionality of everything they do…and the children benefit from it.  As we arrived, we were blessed to spend time playing with the kids and preparing them lunch.  Their smiles & laughter echoed through the campus.

As the day went on, we were able to bless them with a new gravel road to their chapel.  The work was easy for a big group, but would have been impossible for them alone.  In saying yes to Christ’s call, Reaching the Hungry gave the orphanage exactly what they needed that day... and we were all humbled to be a part of it.

Pastor Carlos Recaps January 2023's Costa Rica Mission Trip

January 2023's Costa Rica Mission Trip
Written By: Pastor Carlos

Our team traveled & worked very well together.  After a very nice church worship service on Sunday we had a picnic at the park with the church family. Our team hosted sport games for the children & adults, then gave everyone at the picnic a new t-shirt donated by Rawhide Ranch in Bonsall, CA.

Each morning, we'd start with breakfast at the church and a devotional. Monday & Tuesday we went to the new property that RtH fundraised & purchased for Palabra Viva Ministries to install 2 feet cement drainage pipes across the front of the property. On Wednesday, we painted the children's ministry room and the front wall in the church worship center.  Josh fixed the spotlights on the platform and Carolee gave the cross a rustic appearance. Several of our team members reorganized their storage room using plastic tubs. We also cleaned their parking area and spread 5 yards of rocks to provide a place for their new student ministry class to meet under the trees.

Each evening, a family from the church cooked dinner for our team and either had us over at their homes or we ate at the church. Thursday, we took the team into town to mix with the locals, do a little shopping, and to enjoy lunch at a restaurant of one of the church congregants. It was Brazilian food and all of the team loved it! That evening I taught Shepherd Leadership to all the church's Life Group Leaders. Several of the team members that've been in my previous Life Groups shared testimonies of how being in a Life Group made a difference in their walk with Christ.  Deanna & Carolee led children's ministry during our class time.  Deanna conducted a puppet show for about 20 children and Carolee directed an arts & craft session for the children.

Friday, our team had some down time by going to the beach and to a waterfall/swimming hole.  It was beautiful and relaxing for our team to spend the day with Pastor Christopher and his wife Rachel.  That evening, we had a fantastic time at their home for dinner and made s'mores around their fire pit.

Saturday was another amazing day on which God moved in everyone's life.  I taught at the church's Men's Prayer Breakfast. Each man on our team shared part of their testimony which weaved into my message. The men really enjoyed eating the breakfast burritos & hearing our testimonies. Pastor Chris said many of them commented that this was the first time they heard people share so deeply about challenges in their lives.

That afternoon, many of the women of the church attended a Women's Conference that Lisa and the ladies on our team led. Lisa had each lady on our team share their struggles, challenges, and victories while she weaved each one into her message to the women. They ended their time together with each team member praying for the ladies in a way that related to their testimonies. It was a wonderful time of healing & encouragement.  We ended the evening with a wonderful time in town for pizza & ice cream.

Each morning, we enjoyed breakfast & devotionals at the church... and Sunday morning wasn't any different. After our team time, we helped set up the church for a 10AM worship service. Following the church service, our team visited one of the church elder's home for a lovely lunch.  After lunch, our team was able to spend a little time shopping & resting as we packed our bags to leave the next morning.  On Monday morning, after breakfast and devos at the church, we headed out to San Jose to a hotel near the airport since our flight departed early the next morning.

Everyone on the team loved each other and shined the light of Christ so brightly.  It was wonderful to see them unified, enjoying one another's company and loving all those they encountered.  It was also amazing to see how God brought together 11 people from 6 different churches that had so much in common in their testimonies.

"How to Really Pray for Mission Trips" by Alison Langerman

How to Really Pray for Mission Trips

Written by Alison Langerman

When friends of mine leave for mission trips... they often ask me to pray for their safety and pray that hearts will be softened & receptive to their message. I know that God will protect them, I know that God will not let His word return void, and that God will use their mission trip for His glory. So how can I really pray
and get deeper into prayer for my loved ones heading across the globe to share the Gospel?

1) Don't just pray for safety. Instead, pray for boldness!

I have been on missions trips with team members that have anxiety attacks, debilitating depression, diabetes, fibromyalgia, arthritis, and numerous other ailments. And for every single trip, those dear friends who should be asking for more "safe travels" prayers and asking for more comfort are the team members who jump right into the germ-filled crowds and reach out to touch the broken villagers. God can pamper these teams with window seats on the planes and lavish them with hot showers, but no matter how safe and accommodating the trip is it is always the bold moments which have eternal implications.

Every team member would agree they want safety, but they would agree even more strongly that they do not want to miss an opportunity to share eternal safety with someone who needs it.

2) Pray for clear eyes to see and recognize divine appointments rather than for hearts softened to the Gospel.

I think sometimes when we pray that hearts will be softened to our message it is because we are secretly scared of rejection. We think that God should just help us out a little more and remove all the risk in sharing the Gospel. If we had a 100% success rate guaranteed wouldn't that be great?!  But if God can do the work of taking a group of Americans out of their daily grind and move them to speak to his beloved children on foreign soil, then don't you think He has done all the preparation work we could possibly need?

When I went on my first trip to Africa I noticed that my Dad stopped to talk to everyone. He talked to people at the gas station, peddlers by the side of the road, and the motel staff. Literally everyone!  After a day or two of this, I realized that my Dad had "divine appointments" with every single one of those people.  As a team member on the trip, I thought we were on a mission to share the gospel with the villagers, but my Dad was on a mission to share the gospel with every single person we saw until we got out to the village. He was on a completely different trip and had an entirely bigger vision for what God wanted to accomplish. Wouldn't it be awesome if every person who went on a trip with RTH had that vision? So please pray that team members would have fresh eyes to see all of the divine appointments God has planned for them. Pray that they will recognize and already softened heart when they see one.

It has often been said that prayer is not about getting God to do what we want, but it is about God changing our perspective so we want what He wants. As you pray for the Reaching the Hungry trips going to remote villages and tiny impoverished towns this year, may it change your worldview and may it bless you with God's vision for your life.

Please keep in mind our upcoming trips...

Carolee's Story: How God Will Use Me Just the Way He Created Me

Posted for December 2022

How God Will Use Me Just the Way He Created Me

Written by Carolee Villegas

Carolee Villegas (right)
Oh God, You have, once again, blessed my socks off.  I owe everything to You.  Though I don't deserve all these blessings, You keep on giving to me. The trip to Malawi is a long one but once I am in the village, hearing the songs and seeing the dances of welcome from the women, I am refreshed.  Some of the children look at us with curiosity but that all melts away when we join in games with them.  It's neat to have them teach me the Chichewa language and then laugh at my total mispronunciation.

I so want to show the love of Christ in words and actions.  I cannot stop smiling as Jesus fills me with love.  And I am struck by the contrast in gratefulness between these people and those I meet in the US.  I have met so many in Malawi who are grateful for even the smallest thing.  The women treasured the sanitary supplies, the small bar of soap and panties that we handed out.  They cheered.  When we ran out, they were so disappointed.  I take for granted all the riches I have.  Oh God, help me to be more grateful for even your smallest gifts.

Carolee Villegas (left)
The kids are so excited to play games, to receive a ball and a jump rope to share among the many.  Their joy fills me and shows me how my small effort can reap an ocean of benefits.  God can use me to help others when I submit to His direction.  In turn, I find a deep-down satisfaction.  The people have so little and are completely dependent on the rain to bring them food.  Yet they generously shared food with us when we had installed the water well, played with the kids and shared with the women.  God, open my heart to share with an open hand.  Help me to give up the "mine" mindset.

The other concept that the villagers taught me was revealed in the precious gift they give their children.  The moms carry the babies wrapped up on their backs and the babies are able to nurse whenever they want.  They have no schedule that drives when to eat or sleep.  It all occurs naturally with little trauma.  There is a closeness and community that we so lack in our independent lives.  I need to nurture those around me with my time and focused attention.  Lord, help me to be better at nurturing, as you have nurtured me.

And then there is the water well.  The people either have to send the women off to bring back water from some murky source or send buckets down a deep bore hole that is open to animal excrement and to the ever-blowing dust.  We helped them get access to a protected water source.  More importantly, we gave them access to the living water of the Gospel which showed them God's grace and love through Jesus who died to make all of us clean of sin.

All is not perfect in the village.  Women are not always treated well.  There is still a cult of witchcraft with its evil destructive side.  I understood that if I only choose to see the bright and innocent part of the community, I would not remember how evil lurks in the world and that people are so in need of a savior from spiritual darkness.  Satan seeks to destroy all of us.

Finally, we went to distribute reading glasses in a village.  This highlighted how much I take for granted my access to glasses and reading material.  I am impressed by how God gives us food, water, eyes and methods to connect to others through language and expression, through touch and through smiles.  He gives us opportunities to share His love and His gifts.  We cannot hang on to those gifts but need to let go so that we can truly get His blessings.  I need to continue to allow Him to use me in whatever way He chooses.  Then I will know fulfillment and joy.  And the really amazing part is that He uses me just the way He created me.  Wow.
