2020 Year In Review

2020 wasn't what we expected, but you did some amazing things!

2020 is a year that few of us would willingly relive. But as we reflect, we find that God stretched and challenged us in ways we weren’t expecting. Even as we lamented our inability to send teams to work alongside our brothers and sisters abroad, we saw so many of you step up to give generously, ensuring that ministry continued in the Philippines, Costa Rica, Malawi, Mexico, and the U.S.

It is easy to think about 2020 as a “down” year without missions trips, but in reality we now see just how effective Reaching the Hungry has been. Even when teams are stranded here at home, kingdom work continues. You reached over 1,000 families in the Philippines with the Wick family, kept outreach and discipleship moving in Malawi, sent love and gifts to children at an orphanage in Mexico, and rallied around the Aristas in Costa Rica amid scarcity. You provided hand sanitizer & medical gloves to 20 local churches and distributed 1000's of pounds of clothing to partner organizations here in So Calif. You put in some serious work and have a lot to show for it – THANK YOU!

We also stayed busy here at home, debuting a new website and tools to help us connect with you better in the future, and holding 5 training sessions in November to prepare teams for upcoming trips. Your generosity inspired us to sacrificially give over $80,000 to our international partners, trusting God will replenish our 2021 budget. Last year brought a bit of transition for us, but we love where we are headed.

In 2021, we are asking you to deepen your commitment to RtH through prayer, giving, and reaching out to get others involved. Please consider increasing your monthly support or joining our support team if you haven't already. There is so much to be done, and we are so excited to do it all together with you. Let’s continue to Give, Go, and Grow together!
Together in Christ,

Malawi Mission Trip - August 2018

A collection of our Malawi Team's posts while we were in country:

Days 1-3

Christy Carter: We were able to travel 22 hours and meet some of the most wonderful people I’ve ever met in my life! Our team of 7 helped to put in 8 water wells and bring joy and the story of Jesus to 3 different villages, a total of over 72 families!!! God is good!!
Zac Beougher: Had a fantastic 2nd day here in Malawi, Africa!! The Reaching the Hungry team divided and conquered 3 wells along with games and coloring and bracelets with the women and children in each village. What a joy it is was to share the hope of Jesus with the whole village that I was at after installing the well. The Jesus film went great! Thank you, Norma, for sharing your story with the crowd there.

Day 4

Christy Carter: We were able to visit our partners orphanage. She runs the orphanage with little no help with 21 + children sometimes. She needs more support financially for those beautiful babies ....
Wade Campbell: Today RTH Team moved to Nkhoma in the south to spend time with an amazing lady, Nicole, doing God’s work for orphans. Currently, there are 21 children ranging from 3 weeks to 9 years old. As you can see affection, love, tickling and laughter are the same on this side of the world. The children sang songs like “Jesus in the King of the Jungle” and “Jesus is the King of the Universe”. God’s spirit was high amongst us. After a short break we are heading back now to spend the evening with them.

Day 5

Norma Puerta: Blessed Sunday. - Our RtH team spent the day worshipping and connecting with the people of Dowa District. Our team leader, Zac, had an opportunity to share and encourage the congregation to preservere. After the service, the Chiefs meeting was held. Multiple Chiefs shared their testimonies of abandoning their faith in charms to place their faith in Jesus Christ; they encouraged and challenged one another to be the Christian leaders their villages need. Amen! We also held an reading glasses clinic and presented Talking Bibles to village chiefs to take back to their villages. This will help the villages continue strong in their faith and walk with Christ. Thank you to all of our supporters. The LORD is blessing Malawi.
Christy Carter: Africa Day 5 - we drove 3.5 hours to attend a chiefs’ meeting of over 50 chiefs and many village members, a church service, and an eyeglass fitting for the people of the villages.
Zac Beougher: This Sunday in Malawi included a church service out in the bush in which we had the opportunity to preach, reading glasses clinic, share with the chiefs at their meeting, and then present them with Talking Bibles (audio recordings of the New Testament). Nicole (our friend who runs the orphanage we visited) was able to join us. Just a solid day 😊

Day 6

Christy Carter: Truly needed days of rest and reflection. The days in the villages were very long days and very emotional and thought-provoking days ... thank God for His beautiful creation of this world. There is so much to see and be thankful for!!
Ty Campbell: Our Malawi team enjoyed a nice rest day after the last four days of work installing a record 8 water wells, spending time with the Chief Ministries, and playing with the children at an orphanage. We enjoyed some beautiful African landscapes and animals. Sharing the word of God with some of the locals that were our escorts is what our team is here to accomplish. Tomorrow, we’ll start with devotionals and another beautiful blessed day in Africa.

Days 7-9

Nathan Giles: Today was our day of rest and reflection here in Malawi. We’ve come to the last couple days of our time here and are starting to process through everything we have experienced. With four people on our team who have never been to Malawi before, it has been amazing to see how their perspectives have changed. At the same time, my fourth trip feels so much different from my first. No matter how many times I leave the U.S., I always seem to return changed in some way. It is this time of reflection that allows us to take a step back and discover how God has used these new experiences and relationships to shape us and our futures.
Zac Beougher: The last days that brought this incredible trip to an end were full of rest, reflection and saying goodbye to our friends. It was also good to spend some time taking through how God has used this trip and process what happened. We gathered together as one team united, the Reaching the Hungry US and Malawi team for a Partners Dinner. Then, unfortunately, we had to say goodbye and the team has safely arrived back in LA. Thank you for everyone’s prayers and supporters for making this possible!! What an immense joy it is to be a part of what the Lord is doing and see how He is working in Malawi.

Nicole's Children in Malawi

Education Matters

Meet Nicole

In 2011, I went on holiday to Malawi to visit my sister who was doing an internship in a rural hospital. I had an amazing time and travelled to many beautiful places. Back home, I couldn’t forget about this special country and precious people. After much prayer, I decided to leave my job to go to Africa to serve for 3 months. I volunteered in the same hospital where my sister did her internship. I assisted the clerks in the pediatric ward and helped feed the orphan babies in the maternity ward. On November 3rd, 2012 a little baby arrived in the hospital who needed a bit more help. She had been found in the bush and was critically ill. I got involved and assisted the grandmother with everything that was needed to help this little girl. I thought the grandmother how to care for Maria, however, she became ill every time she returned to the village. After 6 months, the grandmother told me she had a vision from God and asked me to adopt Maria. I refused, however God had a different plan for my life. Here I am today; adopted 2 girls, fostering 18 children and feeding 100 orphans and vulnerable children in the villages around Nkhoma.
The number of children in my house and number of children in the program have been growing slowly from the beginning. Every few months a child was added to my extended family which gave all of us time to get used to the new situations. Taking care for 20
children is a tremendous job and I would have never been able to do this without the unconditional love and support from God. I feel very strong that this is what He has planned for me and He makes everything possible. That does not mean things are easy, or that we always have enough financial support. But knowing that He is always there for me and provides my needs is a huge relief. My faith grew enormously over the last few years and I have experienced that where God guides, He provides (Isaiah 58:11).
I’m incredibly grateful that God choose me to serve for Him. I feel honored and privileged to work for and alongside Him. I’m forever thankful for my two beautiful daughters. They truly are two amazing girls, seeing them grow, develop and heal from their traumatic birth and first year of life is the most precious gift God has given me. For me to be able to continue this work support is needed. If you want to be part of this amazing work, there are many ways to get involved. Prayers, mission trips or donations

are just a few examples. For more info contact info@ReachingtheHungry.org.

Meet Her Children

KATIE

Katie was born on February 28th, 2004. Her father died before she was born and her mother died when she was 3 years old. She stayed with her grandmother until the age of 5. An aunt of her father took her and promised the grandmother to care for her and to send her to school. The following years, Katie hardly went to school; her aunt abused her mentally and physically. When I found Katie, her aunt had left her. She was sleeping on the street and had nothing. She was begging for food to survive. I decided to take her into my house and to send her to school. She started homeschooling to learn English. After 6 months of homeschooling, she went to a local private primary school and had the highest grades in the class. Because she was working so hard and doing incredibly well, I decided to send her to a high quality Christian secondary school. She is currently in the second year and thriving. She started in the lowest level class and is now in the second highest class. All of her teachers tell me she is a very intelligent and hardworking student. During sports day last year she became the "best athlete of the school". She is a strong believer. She loves Saturday night worship services at her school. Her school reports are very promising.
Unfortunately, the school fees are $3,500 dollars per year.
To help Katie build a better future for herself, I would like to ask for help with school fees.
Every term, I struggle to pay the requested amount. Katie is a precious girl who had a very
traumatizing childhood. The only way to change her life is to provide her with a quality
education.

DIANA

Diana was born on May 31st, 2012. Diana’s mother was suffering from TB and HIV. She delivered Diana pre-term at home. A year later, Diana's mother died. At the age of 1, Diana was admitted to the hospital with TB. She recovered and was discharged to finish the treatment at home. She started living with her aunt, however, the aunt was also suffering from TB and HIV. The aunt died when Diana was 1 and a half. Diana was then given to her grandmother. The grandmother had many orphans to take care for and was unable to properly care for Diana.
In March of 2014, she brought Diana, who was in very severe condition, to the hospital. Diana was almost 2 years old but only 66 cm long and 6 kg. She was admitted with TB relapse, severe malaria, severe anemia, severe pneumonia and severe malnutrition. Because there were orphans waiting at home, Diana's grandmother could not stay at the hospital. She decided to take Diana home to let her die in the village. I talked with the grandmother and she agreed to leave Diana in my care.
In June of 2016, I was officially blessed with another daughter.
Diana is very energetic and curious. She loves dancing, playing with her friends and going to Church. She is doing very well in school! She is currently attending a local, lower level school. Our goal is for her to be able to attend ABC Christian academy in Lilongwe; they offer quality, international, Christian education and will help provide Diana with the skills she needs for a better future.

MARIA

Maria was born November 3rd, 2012. I have been taking care of Maria since she was found a few days after birth. Maria is the fourth born to a mother who is mentally unsound. Her two brothers and sister all died soon after birth. All children were born out of rape.
Maria was found 2 days after birth in the bush were her mother delivered her. She was sent to Nkhoma hospital as she was a premature baby (30 weeks) with very low birth weight (1 kg). Upon arriving to the hospital, she had sunburns all over her body and she was put immediately on neonatal sepsis protocol. With the help of her grandmother, I began to care for Maria. I taught the grandmother how to bottle feed her and the importance of hygiene. After two months in the hospital, Maria left to the village. However, she came back very often because of severe diarrhea, malaria, sepsis, etc. After 6 months, the grandmother asked me to adopt Maria. After lots of prayers, Maria officially became my daughter February of 2015.
Maria is a very confident and caring girl. She loves to go to school, to sing and to read her Bible. She is doing very well in school, however, she is currently attending a local lower level school. I would love her to go to ABC Christian Academy in Lilongwe. They offer international Christian education.
